Make Space
New beginnings : )
Hi Reader
I’ve really missed writing to you. How are you doing?
Are you feeling the end-of-year pressure - the push to live up to holiday traditions, reflect on the past year, and plan for the new one? Maybe you feel the need to have a vision board ready by January 1, 2025, so you’re perfectly positioned to hit your goals?
I hope you’re good and taking it easy - practicing gratitude in this season without any of the unhealthy pressure.
In my last newsletter *cough* some monthss ago, I encouraged you to take up space. But today, I want to remind you to make space.
There are a million and one distractions thrown our way - pressuring us to do more, be more, and compare ourselves to others. It’s so easy to become dissatisfied with our present lives. But I want to encourage you to make space.
Make space to just be. Unplug from social media if you need to. Stop filling your mind with what everyone else is doing and focus on your own lane. Take a breath and remember that you don’t have to be everywhere or do everything.
You’re allowed to simply just be.
And when you make that space, please fill it with things that nourish your soul. Whether it’s prayer, rest (seriously, sleep is underrated!), good food, exercise, play, or quality time with loved ones - make space for what truly matters.
Take a breath and remember that you don’t have to be everywhere or do everything. You’re allowed to simply just be.
It’s been a while since we caught up, so here are some highlights from my life these past few months:
Celebrations: My cousin got married to the love of his life in Lagos!! His wedding was a beautiful time filled with good music, good food, interesting dancing, and sweet moments. Shortly after, I travelled to Mexico with family to celebrate my cousin’s 40th birthday - a trip that included zip lining, swimming in a cave (with bats sleeping above!), DJ-ing, living on tacos and churros and celebrating my cousin's essence.
New beginnings: I started a new job at an organisation I’ve been a fan of for years, continuing my work in infectious disease prevention and control. It is called Dr Ameyo Stella Adadevoh (DRASA) Health Trust. I’m now more connected to communities, working on projects to reduce healthcare-associated infections, antimicrobial resistance, and diseases like cholera, mpox, Ebola, and more.
Personal growth: The past few months have been a journey of growing in intimacy with God - talking to Him more, learning to listen better and leading others in prayer too. I’ve laughed, cried, felt anxious, celebrated wins, and marvelled at my growth. I've learned to love more, and go out of my way to make others feel better, heard and seen.
Music: I had the privilege of hosting and organising an album listening party for Sinmidele - a fave - who released her debut album, Perfect Union. The album is such a beautiful depiction of Sinmidele's artistry, and an invitation to intimacy with God. I highly recommend.
An Evening with Sinmidele in Abuja
Challenges and victories: I navigated job application rejections and had to make bold decisions to turn down opportunities too.
Sugar High: I detoxed from sugar, overate the best brownies I know from Cafe Aiko and steadily returned to my 'factory settings' haha.
Mentorship: I hosted a webinar series for university students covering study skills, finances, vision crafting, CV writing, and interviews - I really enjoyed doing this, as I remembered my own journey starting university. If you would like access to past recordings, reply this email, let me know, and I'll share : ) Otherwise, @thestudentsfriend on Instagram has past IG Live replays with experienced professionals who share their journeys and wisdom to help you navigate career and academics!
Worship gatherings: One thing I cannot get used to is the amazing honour of hosting worship gatherings where lives - including my own - are being transformed. This has continued to be a highlight of life, and a safe space. If you're in Abuja sometime and would like to join us, follow @madetoworship.mtw on Instagram, we share updates about the next gathering there!
These are a few chapters of the book of the last few months, and through all the ebbs and flows, I’m incredibly grateful for this beautiful symphony of life.
Before I run, here's a playlist I’ve been enjoying recently:
#OA11 Your Weekly Dose of Wellness and Wisdom Mind the Gap Photo by Bruno Figueiredo on Unsplash Hi Reader You’ve been on my mind. Yes, even with the gap in communication. How have you been? It’s February - already past the halfway mark too! Day 50 of 365. Have you made progress on your goals? Have you made it count?! Bahaha - hopefully, you didn’t just slam this email shut. Don’t worry, I kid. We’re all about healthy pressure over here. While striving for your goals is great, I want to...
#OA9 Your Weekly Dose of Wellness and Wisdom Take Up Space Me taking up space at the HACEY Girl Child Summit :) Hi Reader A sweet friend recently asked me, “How’s your heart?” I know how the daily grind can be, so consider this email a soft landing and safe space for you. If you’re good, that’s awesome. Keep choosing gratitude and joy. If you’re feeling meh, I understand. Please keep your head up. Today, I want to remind you to take up space. What does that even mean? Here’s a quote I found...
#OA8 Your Weekly Dose of Wellness and Wisdom Thank your way out of the funk Hi Reader It’s so easy to spiral into a black hole of nothingness. I know this might not be what you may have been expecting to read, but let’s talk about it. That hole – though sometimes inviting – is cold, dark, uncomfortable and far from the home where we’re meant to put our tired feet up. Feeling listless, restless, apathetic, uncertain, and unsure might resonate with you now, and I hope it remains just a...
